Today what interests me is a story I was told about a program known as "Second Life".
Second Life was one of the first popular online virtual reality programs developed. And for those who have no idea what virtual reality is I will explain. Virtual reality is the concept that an entire world of people can live digitally without anything tangible. Meaning we can create a world online where people interact and live life the exact same way as they would on earth, only in a digital form. In order to participate in this virtual world, one must create something called an Avatar, or a digital representation of one's self. For example, if I want to participate in Second Life, I may go to the web site and create an avatar named Horace. Horace could walk around in this virtual world, drive bentleys, pick up model chicks, rap, travel the world, make dockers to dunks a movement, buy fitteds and a crazy house, you know everything I already do in real life (LMFAO). There is even a currency, known as Linden Dollars. Whatever you can imagine, you can probably find a way to do it online in Second Life.
Now that you understand what Second Life is, lemme tell the story that I can't seem to get over. Recently, one of my colleagues here at the Department of Defense told me that one of the first participants in Second Life happened to be a real estate agent in REAL LIFE. (lol) Apparently, when she first opened her account she spent 100 real dollars of her own money to purchase tons of prime property in this FAKE world. (FYI: 1 US dollar = 260-320 Linden Dollars on average, the exchange rate fluctuates as it does with any other exchange system we have with any other country) As more and more people began building avatars on second life, the value of her properties skyrocketed. Now, this woman makes a six-figure salary every year by simply selling her FAKE property to REAL PEOPLE on a daily basis. SHE DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A DAY JOB!!! Meaning she sits at home, fields offers for her property that you cant find anywhere on this earth's surface, and makes more than most people who bust their ass on standard 9-to-5 jobs. Greatest story ever!
